Did you know that between 70 and 80 percent of heavy duty vehicles on the road today are misaligned? That’s why it is so important to save time and money with proper wheel alignments.
A properly aligned vehicle is one in which all wheels are aimed in the same direction.
A truck that consistently pulls to one side while driving on straight, uncrowned pavement is more than an aggravation for the driver. It’s costing you money in terms of premature tire wear and excessive fuel usage due to heightened drag and rolling resistance. In extreme cases, it can even be a safety issue for trucking operations.
Like any other vehicles, heavy trucks have four main alignment angles:
- Toe-in, the inward skew of the wheel as seen from above
- Toe-out, the opposite of toe-in
- Caster, the inward or outward tilt of the top of the wheel
- Camber, the fore-and-aft position of the wheel relative to a kingpin line
A deviation in any of these angles can be enough to cause drivability and handling problems. If left too long, it will start to scrub tread off of the inner or outer edge of a tire due to drag.
