Free Service Tire Company Marks 97 Years In Business
97 years is a long time to be doing anything, but that's how long Free Service Tire Company has been serving drivers in the Johnson City, TN area.
We got our start way back in 1919...when Dan Wexler came back from service in WWI and went into business with his friend Robert Wiley. Our name, Free Service Tire Company, came from Dan's philosophy that we shouldn't charge for service...just for the gasoline and tire patches we sold. In those early days, we had a fleet of yellow-and-blue motorcycles with sidecars, which would deliver gas, water or oil to stranded drivers -- cars from the era didn't even have fuel gauges yet! Free Service Tire Company actually offered roadside assistance via motorcycle well into the 1930s.
Over the years, Free Service Tire Company grew, adding stores around Tennessee, and Lewis Wexler, Sr., current CEO, handed the reins of the company's day to day operations to Lewis, Jr., current President of Free Service Tire Company, in 2005; thus keeping control of Free Service Tire Company in the Wexler family. Over the years, Lewis Sr. and Lewis Jr. honed their management skills; the elder Wexler took a Professional Management Development course at Harvard, while Lewis Jr pursued a career at Goodyear, learning the tire industry from the inside out. Lewis's brother Harrison eventually joined the company after graduating from Wofford College in South Carolina.
Today, Free Service Tire Company is comprised of 17 locations across three states, with 200 employees, a retread plant, four wholesale centers and two commercial tire centers. We've come a long way in 97 years, and we're now well into our third generation as a successful, family-owned business. We chalk it all up to one thing -- the message of "plan your work, and work your plan" and a commitment to customer service and hard work. We hope you'll be seeing us soon, and that we'll be around for 97 years to come!
