Fall car care tips

September 15th, 2014

Auto Repair & Auto Service TN & VAOctober is Fall Car Care Month, according to the Car Care Council. So here are some quick tips to keep your vehicle in good running condition as the weather turns cooler.

Battery. Cold temperatures can affect your battery's charge, so make sure that your battery connections are secure, clean and free of corrosion. Free Service Tire will test your battery’s charge free too, through the end of this month when you present the coupon found here

Gas tank. In colder months, remember to fill your gas tank when your gas gauge indicates it is half-full, and don't let it go below a quarter full without filling up. Colder temperatures can cause water to condense out of the air in your tank, allowing moisture to sink to the bottom. This moisture can dilute your fuel and cause reduced gas mileage, and it can even freeze in your fuel line.

Heater/defroster. At the first frost, you're going to miss your heater and defroster if they aren't functioning properly. It's always best to check their working condition before the coldest months begin. If you haven't had your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system checked in a while, now is a good’s time.

Tires. As fall deepens, the weather turns wetter, and you want to be confident your tires will really grip rain-soaked streets. So do the penny tire test we’ve told you about, and make sure your tires are inflated to the appropriate pressure (remember, cold weather can make the air in your tires contract, reducing your tires' inflation). If you have concerns about either, bring them to us.

Radiator. You should have your radiator fluid flushed once a year, and fall is a good time to have this done. If you don't flush the coolant, at least make sure it is at the correct ratio (usually a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water). Checking that the radiator hoses are in good condition and maintaining the cooling system's pressure before the chill of winter sets in is a good idea too.

Fall is a great time to jump in the car and take a drive to feel the cool, fresh air on your face while watching the turning of the leaves. So bring your vehicle to Free Service Tire for a fall performance inspection so you can head out to enjoy the gorgeous East Tennessee scenery, worry free!
